Speed Reader Helps Keep Malahat Safe

VICTORIA – Motorists are now able to confirm and adjust their speed on the Trans Canada Highway at ‘Malahat Village’.

“Speed reader boards have proven to be an effective, inexpensive traffic education tool,” says Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong. “They serve as a reminder to motorists to check their speed against posted limits and to drive safely.”

Speed reader boards have been installed in both directions of Highway 1, with south bound traffic speeds revealed on the reader board near the south Shawnigan Lake turnoff and the reader board for north bound traffic placed just south of the Petro Can gas station.

The boards are the latest in ongoing safety upgrades undertaken as a result of the 2007 Malahat Corridor Study. The Ministry has also recently implemented the following safety improvement:

  • Highly reflective pavement markings.
  • Centreline rumble strips.
  • Pull-outs for RCMP and CVSE enforcement.
  • Improved intersection lighting.
  • Longer deceleration lanes at Shawnigan Lake Road and the Split Rock rest area.

The Ministry will continue to monitor the roadway to ensure the Malahat remains safe and usable. Since 2001, the Province has invested more than $9 million to improve safety on the Malahat portion of the TCH.

The Vancouver Island-based electrical company Raylec Power Ltd. will be responsible for the upkeep of the new speed reader boards.
